Frequently Asked Questions
Is this program free?
Yes! NeuroYouth is supported through grants from Snohomish County. With adequate financial support, we can provide essential research funds to each student, enabling them to carry out their brain health projects effectively. It ensures that they have the necessary resources to conduct in-depth research and develop impactful solutions.
When and where is this program held?
The program will be held in Seattle. More details on the location will be available after scholars are accepted. The program will officially start on June 22nd, 2024. More information and application timeline to come soon.
Can students only from Washington apply?
Currently, only students from Washington can apply. It does not matter where you are in Washington, because some scholars may opt in to participate virtually. However, we strongly encourage students from King County and Snohomish County to apply as our in-person program will be held in this vicinity.
How are youth supported?
Every admitted scholar becomes part of a peer support group. This group is a community of BIPOC youth who all share a common goal: striving for excellence and creating a brighter future for their communities. They meet regularly, both online and in-person, to share insights, advice, and encouragement. It's a space where they can lean on each other and build lasting connections. As BIPOC youth, they provide the minority perspective. They see the authentic systemic barriers, racial disparities in healthcare, and the need for representation in the medical field. NeuroYouth seeks to address these challenges by empowering BIPOC youth to become the agents of change. By actively involving them in research and community engagement, we're helping them build skills, confidence, and networks to overcome these hurdles.
What are some example research projects?
Some of the most common issues for youth today are sleep deprivation, mental health, drug addiction, and social media. Therefore, some examples of potential projects might be: conducting research on how phone addiction affects youth mental health and developing strategies to combat this global issue; researching the importance of quality sleep for academic success; researching and finding neurocognitive trends with youth who suffer from drug addiction and create educational videos, and etc. Remember, you have the opportunity to research ANY topic in neuroscience! It also does not have to be solely scientific research, it could be conducting surveys, developing educational curriculums, or starting your own initiative.
